Types of Transmissions in Vehicles

A conversation about cars is never complete without mentioning gearboxes or transmissions. A gearbox is one of the main components customers check when buying a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. Also referred to as transmission, this component is responsible for changing the engine's speed based on the required power. With the right transmission, you can improve your engine's performance and optimally use the car's engine rev. At Metro Chrysler Ltd., we pride ourselves on a new inventory featuring models with varying transmissions. Below we will cover the common types of transmissions in vehicles.

Manual Transmission

Manual transmission is the oldest type of gearbox invented with the first automotive engine. For it to operate, the driver needs to press the clutch to disengage the gearbox from the engine before manually choosing the desired gear. A manual transmission requires coordinated movement between the right foot for gas, the left foot for clutch, and the right hand for the gear lever.

Automatic Transmission

Most modern vehicles are fitted with an automatic transmission. This gearbox is relatively easy to operate, all you have to do is put the car in D (drive), and the vehicle will automatically shift gears. However, you must balance the use of the brake and accelerator to ensure a steady and smooth ride.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

The CVT is also classified under an automatic transmission since it doesn't have a clutch or require the driver to change the gear. A CVT is also called a gearless transmission since it doesn't have predesigned mechanical gear ratios. It features a continuous set of ratios engaged through the rev range.

Semi-Automatic and Dual-Clutch Transmission

A semi-automatic transmission is a blend of manual and automatic gearboxes. The principle behind this design is to fuse the control of a manual with the ease and comfort of an automatic. In most cases, drivers use the manual transmission to start the vehicle, and the rest is taken over automatically. On the other hand, a Dual-Clutch transmission is an automatic gearbox known for its compact size and fast shifts. It's mostly used on performance vehicles and sports cars, and it features two clutches, one for even gears and another for odd gears.

ECVT Transmission

An Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT) is a step into the future. It features a selector lever similar to an automatic transmission where D standards for drive. However, it has an electronic control system that tracks driver behaviour and automatically optimizes the interaction of the engine and transmission for optimal performance.
